Juliet’s love of the sport is displayed clearly through her channel, helping her to cultivate an audience of 82,700 people. YouTube allows creators like me to tell unique stories in our own way. Women athletes are under-represented in traditional media, making up as little as 5% of the coverage. This feeds into larger issues around sporting careers for women and more generally female participation in sport. YouTube helps us to challenge conventions and shows the world that women are here and are achieving great things. It is an important platform that allows me to speak directly to young women and encourage them to develop their interest in sport.
English with Lucy
Languages

English with Lucy’s channel is primarily focused on teaching people the English language, however she also looks at nuance and slang alongside other tips for fluency. She helps her audience to grow their skill-set and understanding, whilst boosting confidence levels by making her lessons as fun and entertaining as possible. Lucy started her channel whilst on a year abroad during university and it has been growing rapidly ever since. She has over 5 million subscribers and the success of her YouTube channel has led her to offer online courses ranging from specific points on how to pronounce consonants and vowels, to a full pronunciation course.

I want people to come to my channel and feel that they have been educated in an entertaining way. YouTube allows me to engage with my students and has helped me to launch my online language business. I absolutely love that I can teach my global classroom of students directly from my home.
Education

Exam season is routinely one of the most daunting and isolating periods for secondary school students. Luckily, Mr Bruff is here to help. Since 2011, the English teacher has been producing revision videos for GCSE and A Level students, offering tips on literary analysis, essay technique and text summaries. It all started when Mr Bruff spent 4 hours planning a lesson that would only be seen by one class, one time. After thinking about the level of effort he’d put into creating it, Mr Bruff recorded a snippet of the lesson and uploaded it to YouTube. Since then, the channel has had over 53 million views - definitely larger than your average classroom! The success of the channel has led Andrew to publish and sell his own revision guides, which have rave reviews online.

I passionately believe that the quality of your education should not depend on where you live, which school you attend, or how much money your parents have. With YouTube, educational videos like mine are accessible to everyone.

Looking for revision motivation? Need support to get you to reach your full potential? Look no further. Ruby Granger’s channel is a haven of study tips. After she began her GCSEs, Ruby was inspired to create content when she found that additional resources online were truly hard to come by. She took matters into her own hands and decided to fill the gap, making helpful content for other students much like herself. Now in her final year of university, Ruby’s channel has been a passion project for a long time. A firm believer in making learning fun, she’s moved towards creating history content for her viewers, as a way of continuing her love of learning. Ruby’s audience enjoy her open and friendly content style, which has helped her amass nearly 600,000 subscribers. Her success on YouTube has led to her starting her own brand of academic essentials, known as Pumpkin Productivity.

I started creating content when I was fourteen. I'd always loved studying and often felt like an outsider because of this, but YouTube showed me that there were like-minded people out there — and my channel became a space where learning could be celebrated as something exciting. Over the past six years, I have shared my academic journey online — from GCSEs, to A Levels, to university; through being rejected from my dream school, changing university courses, and taking on internships. It's actually pretty amazing to be able to look back on this time, and at the wonderfully supportive community which has developed off the back of it on YouTube.

For Madeleine Olivia, an ethos of minimalism has become a thriving business on YouTube. Her ethos is based on creating content that focuses on sustainability and simplicity, and Madeleine shows us how she practices this by allowing us a glimpse into her idyllic home in Cornwall. The success of her channel means that she now curates her channel full time, sharing her passions with her subscribers: from her love of interior design, recently renovating her home, to inspiring her viewers to cook more plant-based foods, offering the perfect digital cookbook of tasty recipes. Having gained over 500,000 subscribers, her success has extended beyond the platform itself, and in 2020, she released her first book: “how to simplify your life and live more sustainably”.

After being a huge fan of YouTube since it began, I had always wanted to create videos on the platform growing up. Some of my biggest inspirations since I was a teenager were YouTubers. I loved how I was able to connect with others who were interested in cooking plant based foods, minimalism, sustainability and improving their lives. The community on YouTube is what keeps me making videos to this day. I have shared everything from my day-to-day life, travels, mental health, food, exploration of minimalism and sustainability, renovation of my home and still get excited to share more. Running my own business has always been a dream of mine, and making videos online has enabled me to do that over the past few years all the while hopefully inspiring my audience!
